Chinese stores pulling Japanese food | Bangkok Post: news

BEIJING: A number of Chinese stores have pulled almost all Japanese food products from their shelves after a TV consumer rights show alleged that some items were from areas affected by the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. Kyodo News confirmed on Friday that stores in Beijing and Shanghai, as well as some online shops, had stopped selling Japanese food products. Some outlets put notices for customers on their emptied shelves explaining that they were carrying out safety checks on Japanese food items after being informed of the TV show by the government. It said the two food products taken up by the state broadcaster were not produced in prefectures covered by China's import prohibition. As well, it said, all food products sold in China go through quarantine inspections before entering the country and are accompanied by certificates of producers.
